To mark World Water Day 2024, the OneWater - Eau Bien Commun research programme, jointly run by the CNRS, BRGM and INRAE, is organising a photo contest dedicated to water. Photo enthusiasts of all backgrounds, share your views on water through this contest. Submit your photos between 22 March and 24 May 2024!

Why a photo contest? We wanted to show the diversity of faces, health conditions, states of freshwater in the French territories. On the occasion of World Water Day 2024, we are inviting you to express yourself in pictures on the theme :"Water perspectives - between pressures, uses and sustainability". The contest is open to all, with no financial contribution required, and photos must be submitted between 22 March and 24 May 2024 on the dedicated platform. Photos must be accompanied by a title, a caption and a short biography of the author(s).

Before participating to the contest, please read the terms and conditions below. Photos that do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be accepted.

 

PARTICIPATON

The contest is open to all. The participant may be an individual of any nationality or a group. In the latter case, only one person will be considered the principal author, the other persons will be co-authors. The participant must be able to claim authorship of the image submitted, in accordance with article L 113-1 of the French Intellectual Property Code. He/she must hold all rights to the photo, including formal written authorisation from the person(s) appearing in the photo, when applicable. 

Submitted photos must be have been taken between 2022 and 2024 and may be field photos or photos from an imager (telescope, microscope, computer, etc.). They must have been taken in the French territories (Hexagon and Overseas) and must refer to freshwater. Participants may submit only one image for the entire 2024 OneWater photo contest. The image submitted may not have already won another photo contest.

Three photos will be declared winners of the competition and will receive a prize. Additional non-winning photos may be selected by the jury, depending on the number of submissions, and will be exhibited alongside the three finalist photos at the next OneWater 2025 Science Days. With the agreement of the participants - related to the acceptance of the general conditionson the submission platform - the photos may be used at a later date and promoted by the OneWater - Eau Bien Commun national research programme during events and for the creation of visual contents.

The submission will not be final until the candidate has filled in all the mandatory fields in the form, read and accepted the competition rules and validated the submission of the form. An email confirming participation will be sent to the candidate. 

ELIGIBLE IMAGES

The photo submitted may have been taken in natural light or using various types of radiation, optical or electronic instruments and modelling tools. Colouring and graphic processing using "Photoshop©"-type software are permitted in order to clarify or enhance the content of the image, but the photo must not be distorted (photomontage prohibited).  

The minimum image size required is 2500 pixels on the smallest side and the expected resolution is 300 dpi. However, if the imagesa are to be exhibited, a size of 4000 pixels would be ideal. Below 2,500 pixels, the size of the image will be a criterion for disqualification by the jury.  

The file size must not exceed 10 megabytes (10,000 KB). 

The image must be in png or jpg format. 

The image must be accompanied by a title (max. 60 characters), a caption describing the photo (max. 500 characters, including the place and date the photo was taken) and a short biography of the author(s). The caption must be accessible and understandable to a wide audience. 

Any images submitted after the deadline of 24 May (23:59) will not be accepted.  

PRIZES AND VISIBILITY

Three photos will be chosen as the winners of the competition: a Grand Jury Prize, a Jury Prize and a People's Favourite Prize will be awarded. The winners will each receive : 

  • A large-format print of their photo
  • Il était une fois la Terre, Pierrick Graviou, Erik Orsenna, Editions Gallimard
  • A one-year subscription to the CNRS magazine Carnets de science 
  • A display of their photo in a dedicated exhibition area at the next OneWater 2025 Science Days

The photo awarded the "Jury's Grand Prize" will be featured in the next issue of INRAE's Ressources magazine. 

JURY AND EVALUATION CRITERIA

The selection panel for 2024 OneWater photo contest will be constituted by 7 members from the fields of photography, communication and research. The jury will select the Grand Jury Prize and the Jury Prize. The public will be invited to vote online for their favourite photo for the "People's Favourite Award". The opening of voting for the "People's Favourite Award" will be announced via our website and LinkedIn page.

In addition to the theme, the selection criteria will focus on the aesthetics of the image and its ability to tell a story or convey an emotion. 

PUBLICATION RIGHTS, COPYRIGHT AND IMAGE RIGHTS

The participant must be the author of the image and hold all rights to it, including authorisation from the person(s) appearing in it, where applicable. 

By participating to the contest, the participant recognises that the OneWater - Eau Bien Commun research programme will not be held liable for any copyright infringement that may occur and any disputes that may arise as a result. 

OneWater - Eau Bien Commun reserves the right to publish the selected and winning images of the contest in any media and/or format, for the purpose of promoting the contest and the finalists.

The OneWater - Eau Bien Commun programme will mention the author, and any co-authors, on each reproduction of the selected image.

The CNRS will sign a copyright assignment with each participant whose image will be included in the 2024 selection of the OneWater photo contest.

PERSONAL DATA

The OneWater - Eau Bien Commun research programme, jointly run by the CNRS, BRGM and INRAE, informs the participants that their data (civil status, biograhy) will be processed for the purpose of organising the photo contest, in accordance with legal provisions, and will be stored in a file system or database provided for this purpose. These data will be accessible to the contest organisers for the entire duration of the OneWater - Eau Bien Commun research programme (2022-2031), unless the participant notifies them in writing of their wish to modify or delete them. You have the right to rectify, return and delete your data at any time by making a request to the agent who collected the data.

En s’inscrivant au concours, le.la participant.e accepte d'en respecter le règlement officiel. Il.elle consent, pour les besoins de dissémination et de promotion du concours, à l’utilisation, la modification, la reproduction, la publication, la transmission et la diffusion, par les organisateurs, de la biographie, la légende et la photographie transmises, et ce, à but non commercial. 

Toute décision des organisateurs à l’égard de tout aspect de ce concours, y compris l’admissibilité ou la disqualification des formulaires de participation, des commentaires ou des images sera finale et sans appel. 

Le.la participant.e dégage OneWater – Eau Bien Commun de toute responsabilité quant à un quelconque dommage pouvant résulter, directement ou indirectement, de leur participation ou tentative de participation au concours.
