As part of the DEESAC project (Sustainability and Exploitability of Groundwater in Confined or Covered Aquifers), funded by the OneWater – Eau Bien Commun programme, the Confined Aquifers Community of Practice is organising its first webinar.
This event is open to all researchers and public and private stakeholders involved in water management who are interested in confined or covered aquifers.

This first webinar will focus on the Carboniferous Limestone aquifer, a transboundary hydrogeological system shared by France, Wallonia and Flanders.

Composed primarily of fractured limestone, this aquifer is unconfined in its eastern part (Belgium) and confined in its western part (France and Belgium).

Intensively exploited for more than a century for:

  • drinking water supply,
  • industrial uses,
  • agriculture,
  • quarrying activities,

this groundwater resource has experienced a substantial decline in piezometric levels, particularly in the confined part of the aquifer.

Studied since the 1970s, this aquifer remains the subject of ongoing research aimed at improving our understanding of its functioning and strengthening management tools.

During this webinar, Géraldine Picot-Colbeaux (BRGM) and Pascal Goderniaux (University of Mons) will present:

  • the available data on this aquifer;
  • the management tools in use;
  • the indicators used to monitor it.

The 30-minute presentation will be followed by a discussion among researchers, water managers and DEESAC project partners.
